It's still hot, but being outside is bearable now. I started the day with my first ever excursion to the Bronx. A branch of the library there had a book I wanted, so I took the hour and fifteen minute (or more) train ride. I'm not sure how to feel about the Bronx. It's a little scary. When I left the subway station I was really uncomfortable with the area, but once I got a block away it was better. Still, it's not the kind of place I'd want to be at night. It's very different than the rest of New York. It's not as crowded and feels more like a smaller city, but it's very dirty. I'm not surprised that tough women like Sonya Sotomayor and Jo from The Facts of Life are from there! I actually walked past Sonya Sotomayor's high school. I didn't hate my visit, but I don't think I'll do it again.
Next I went to the Mid Manhattan Library for a different book. Next stop was the post office, which closed 5 minutes before I got there, so Ryan and Matt, you'll have to wait another day for that post card.
The most important achievement of the day was finally finding pepper spray! I had to call the company that makes the only brand sold in New York and they gave me the name of a pharmacy in Manhattan. It was a tiny place that didn't even have real shelves. Most of their products were on the wall behind the counter and the rest were on shelves under and on the counters. The store part could have fit in my apartment.
I went home just after I started getting sick of the heat and just before a headache set in. It was a nice, relaxing day. Thrift stores tomorrow!
Today's photo is Macy. I've been neglecting her and giving all my attention to the cats. Sorry Macy!
Also tough women like Matt's mom. Can't mess with her!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know she was from there. Don't tell her I don't like it there!
